Meal kit cost calculator

Two taps, six kits, one ranked answer. The same total-price method we use in our cost guides: per-portion price times portions, plus delivery, with unavailable box sizes flagged honestly.

✓ Fact-checkedMads BukholtBy Mads BukholtUpdated 17 August 2026
Same method as our annual cost guide: per-portion price × portions + delivery

What would your week cost?

Set your household and how many evenings the box should cover. We price all six kits from their advertised starting per-portion prices, with delivery included.

How we calculate

Weekly cost = starting price per portion × people × meals + the provider’s delivery fee. Mindful Chef’s £5.99 fee is waived automatically when the box passes £49, exactly as on their site. The yearly figure uses the same typical cadence as our annual guide, about 15 boxes a year, because almost nobody orders 52 weeks straight. Starting prices are “from” prices: pricier recipes cost more.

Home-cooked baseline: We estimate a home-cooked dinner at £3 to £5 a portion in our family cost guide. The kit buys convenience, not savings.

Prices and ratings are taken from our own provider reviews (checked July 2026) and our box-size checks of 17 August 2026. Starting per-portion prices are each provider’s advertised “from” price: individual recipes can cost more. Typical year = about 15 boxes, the cadence assumed in our annual cost guide. Welcome discounts are not included.

What the numbers do and do not include

The weekly figure is the provider’s cheapest published route to that many portions: the advertised starting per-portion price times portions, plus the standard delivery fee. It excludes welcome discounts, which are temporary by design, and it excludes the pricier recipes every menu carries. HelloFresh, for example, starts at £3.75 but real-world picks run up to about £8.25 a portion, as we document in our HelloFresh review.

Greyed-out rows are honesty, not errors: not every provider sells every configuration. HelloFresh has no 1-person box and its plan picker currently offers 3 to 5 recipes a week, Green Chef boxes serve 2 or 4, Riverford serves 2 to 4, and Mindful Chef sells 1-, 2- and 4-person boxes with 1 to 4 recipes. Box sizes were verified on the providers’ own sites on 17 August 2026 for our HelloFresh for one person piece.

Frequently asked questions

Why is delivery so decisive for small households?
A flat fee spread over six portions costs half as much per portion as the same fee over three. That is why Riverford’s free delivery and Mindful Chef’s £49 free-delivery threshold can beat a lower headline price for solo cooks, and why the ranking in this calculator changes when you change household size.
Is the “typical year” figure realistic?
It assumes about 15 boxes a year, the same illustrative cadence as our annual cost guide. Most subscribers pause and skip weeks, ordering closer to every 3 to 4 weeks than every week. If you genuinely order weekly, multiply the weekly figure by 52 instead.
Why does the calculator exclude welcome discounts?
Because they end. HelloFresh runs up to 60% off the first box and Gousto discounts the first three boxes, but the standing price is what you pay from then on. Current offers live on our voucher codes page.
